Wheat Ridge High School's Photography program

starts by teaching the basics of photography through film and darkroom hands on experiences.
From there, students can chose to continue their study of Film Photography or take what they have learned and move to Digital Photography. Our school has one of the largest and well equipped darkrooms in the district with a strong program based on style, technique, craftsmanship and creativity.

A camera is a camera, how you use it is what matters.

Course offerings:

Beginning PHotography

Advanced Photography

Digital Photography

Everyone starts with this class, it is a prerequisite for all other photo classes. In this class, the use of traditional film and chemicals are used to learn camera use and functions, compositional techniques and historical processes. The hands on experience of developing film and printing in a darkroom help them understand the artistic side of photography. SLR cameras are used but it is not a requirement for students to have their own. After this class, they can choose to stick with film and take Advanced Photography or they can try out Digital Photography.

This is an upper level study of film photography. The advanced level classes start to focus more on content and advanced techniques. The use of different cameras, alternate photographic process and altering images in post production are explored. Personal SLR cameras are encouraged but not required. There are multiple levels of this class that can be taken throughout a students' 4 years, possibly leading to the A.P. Studio Art course, senior year.
After leaning the basics in Beginning Photography, students can choose to take what they have learned and apply that knowledge to Digital Photography. DLSR cameras are used (students are not required to provide their own) and use of full manual settings are expected. Post production will be done using the Adobe Suite, specifically Photoshop and Lightroom. Multiple levels of this class are offered and can be taken throughout high school, possibly leading to the A.P. Studio Art course, senior year.
