Some come because they are curious. Some come to face their fear. Some come because they want to build on the skills they have developed in past training. But all come because creating visual art offers the allure of powerful connection—within oneself, with the world, & with others. For many years, Studio 23 has established itself as a place that provides students and teachers with the opportunity to research, create, collaborate, and grow creatively. |

Course Offerings
Beginning Creative Art:
Introduces students to the fundamentals of two dimensional design concepts, and to develop the students’ artistic skills and knowledge. Through a series of projects and assignments students will explore the basics of 2D concepts such as line, space, perspective, symmetry, balance, texture etc. The students will use various mediums and tools to expand their understanding of visual concepts and knowledge of the design process. Student projects will improve technical and creative skills while encouraging creativity and artistic growth. |
Intermediate Creative Art:
Introduces students to the technical and aesthetic aspects of drawing and painting. Concepts such as medium, composition and perspective are explored through a hands-on, project–based approach. This course will introduce a variety of tools, techniques and media including pencil, ink, oil pastels, acrylic painting, and watercolor painting. Students will use materials as a medium for visual communication and as a means for creating their own personal aesthetic. Emphasis will be placed on the elements and principles of art and design as tools for demonstrating meaning within works of art. |
Art Portfolio:
The focus of the class will remain on the elements of art and principals of design, but on a more intuitive level. A secondary goal of Advanced D&P will be a more in depth focus on art interpretation and appreciation. Students will have longer and more complex projects that would require definite artistic interest and discipline. Students will use knowledge of the elements of art and the principals of design to find and build upon their own personal style and aesthetic. This is an ideal course selection for students who want to seriously pursue art throughout high school and are considering pursuing it at the college level. |
Meet Mr. Edgar

Burke Edgar is a working artist and art educator specializing in Drawing, Painting & Graphic Design, and dabbles in Photography, Sculpture, and whatever else he can get his hands on. Having received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Art Education at UNC, he has been a proud member of the Farm since 2018. In addition to art and education, he is an avid skier/snowboarder, a dedicated father and husband, and obsessive music collector.
In his classes, he strives to teach his students to balance structure with improvisation, formalism with abstraction, theory with instinct, that you must first understand the rules before you can break them, and that above all else: we exist to make our ideas real.
